Alphonsa Bhavan, Adichira, Kerala

"We boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God."

Alphonsa convent is situated at Adichira in Kottayam district of Kerala. It is under Mudiyoorkara Holy Family Church near the Medical college. It was once a chapel of the ancient and famous Kudamllor Forane Church Changancherry Archdiocese. Today this church is a big parish having many congregations and many religious institutions. Families of this beautiful and serene land, mainly rely on Agriculture.

Rev.Fr.George Kannanthara was an ardent missionary in the North-East Mission. He was the fourth son of the Kannanthara family. While he was serving the people of God in the North- East, he was suffering from physical ailments. As he was traveling to Kerala to his native land for better treatment, he suffered a massive cardiac arrest as he reached Palakkad and breathed his last. In loving memory of this priest, his brother decided to give away twenty-two cents of land from Fr. George inheritance for a noble cause. Hence they contacted Sr. Concepta, a relative of their family, and donated the twenty-two cents of land to SABS for conducting some charitable works on the condition that it shouldn’t be sold away. We purchased some land adjacent to that plot and constructed a building for a nursery school. Since there were no sufficient children for nursery we had to give up the attempt. Later the building was renovated and made a convent. It was blessed on 13/10/2012, by the parish priest Rev. Fr. Joseph Kalarickal and Rev.Fr. James Panackal CMI, the then Provincial of Nirmal Province, Jagdalpur. This house is given to Divya jyoti Province from Jagdalpur as the mission house of the Balasore Province. Sisters are engaged in parish activities. They go for house visits as they are given assigned wards in the Parish. Sisters conduct Eucharistic adoration with the people. Sisters take part in every religious function of the units. Sisters prepare the children for the Holy Communion and confirmation.

We the SABS are grateful to the Kannanthara family and are indebted to the late Rev. Fr. George Kannanthara.
