St. Mary's Convent, Noamundi

"You are the light for the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden"

 

Tata steel, a well-reputed company of India, recognized felt the need for education in the locality of Noamundi Tata steel wanted to establish quality education for the children of its employees and dependents. With this, they were in search of a society which has got good experience and reputation in this field. With this determination, they approached St. Marvia School, Barbil because they realized that the products of St Mary's could excel in different fields.

Dr. Avinash Prasad, the then GM, OMQ of Noamundi approached Sr. Annie Valiyaveedu the then principal of St. Mary's School, Barbil and sent different executives of OMQ with this need. The discussions and the studies went on for a long period of time. Mr. M C Thomas, chief, Noamundi and Mr. Debasis Banerjee, Head HR/IR, played a key role in getting this dream translated into reality. At last both Tata steel and the Aradhana Society came to an agreement. The provincial superior Mother Concepta put this matter for the prayerful study and discussion of the provincial council to carry out the mission of our beloved founder. Mother Concepta and the team agreed to take up the school. The foundation stone was laid on 8 May 2006 by Mrs. Sagma Muthuramam, wife of the Managing director of Tata Steel Jamshedpur.

At 5 pm on 7 July 2006 the official agreement was signed by Mr. H. Jha and Dr. Avinash Prasad, GM OMQ and Mother Concepta, the provincial. Sr. Sophy Maria Naduthala, Sr. Bridget Velakalam and Sr. Arpita Vettukuzhyill were sent to run the school. Sr. Annie Valiyaveedu along with her community members at Barbil gave a backup to get the newly formed community established. Rt. Rev. Dr. Felix Toppo, Bishop of Jamshedpur, and Rev Fr. Richard Mirinda, Parish Priest of Kiriburu, welcomed us to the diocese. The Bishop agreed to meet our spiritual needs by sending fathers. On 7 July itself Bishop Felix Toppo and Fr. Vijay from Jamshedpur reached Noamundi for the official blessing of the convent and the School. On the next day, amidst the fathers and faithful Bishop Felix delivered a beautiful sermon and lighted the lamp and blessed the house. Bishop Felix was kind enough to send Fr. Leo OFM for the spiritual guidance. We also remember with gratitude the priests of Barbil church who were ever ready to take trouble to come and offer holy Mass in the beginning.
